Fit Kit: the Reflection of Fashion and Masculinity in English Football Uniforms

In September, I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to present my research at the Association of Dress Historians’ conference, Fashioning the Body for Sport and Leisure. My paper focused on the cut and design of male football uniforms in English clubs. Through images of football kits throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, I argued:

If fashion is an indication of masculine values and aspirations, and if football kits are a reflection of fashion, then football kit can be understood as a carrier of the masculine values of its contemporary culture.
